CSAE Predoctoral Fellow

Contract: Full time
Salary: Researcher grade 6: £35,681 - £41, 636 (with a discretionary range to £46, 476 annum)

The postholder will join Associate Professor Dennis Egger as an inaugural pre-doctoral fellow of a new research group for macro-experimental development at Oxford. The group will focus on combining experimentation at-scale with more structural approaches to economics to learn about the challenges and impacts of large-scale development interventions. Thematically, the research agenda will initially focus on the macroeconomic and general equilibrium impacts of cash transfers and social protection more broadly, particularly in East Africa (Malawi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia). The group will work with partner organisations, including local governments and the NGO GiveDirectly.

 
The post-holder would be embedded in a larger research group, learn from peers, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, and have access to the broader community of the Centre for the Study of African Economies [CSAE], an internationally renowned development economics research centre at the University of Oxford, with researchers based in the Department of Economics, the Blavatnik School of Government [BSG], and the Oxford Department for International Development [ODID] e several largescale randomized controlled trials and large-scale data collections – on the direct and general equilibrium impacts of cash transfers and social protection policies, including in the context of refugees – in the field or in preparation, in Malawi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.

Casual Research Associate

Contract: 12 weeks from 15 April 2026, 10 - 20 hours per week
Salary: Grade 6.1 (£18.80 per hour), plus hourly holiday pay (12.07% of hours worked)
Location: The role can be carried out remotely with optional visits to the Blavatnik School of Government. You must be based and have the right to work in the UK.

The Blavatnik School of Government and Centre for the Study of African Economies are seeking to engage two casual Research Associates to work on/support Dr Kate Orkin’s research work on cash transfers and civic engagement in Kenya and Malawi.

The role
The casual Research Associates will provide assistance with/will have responsibility for:

Reporting to Dr Orkin and assisting with substantive research tasks, including data collection, analysis and literature reviews.
Conducting desk research using data from two randomized controlled trials of cash transfer programs (one in Kenya, the other in Malawi).
Liaising with partners and stakeholders as part of project convenings.
This casual engagement will be for 12 weeks. We are looking for the successful candidate to start on 15 April 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

We estimate between 10 and 20 hours work per week. Hours may vary from week to week depending on project requirements.

Payment will be at the rate of Grade 6.1 (£18.80 per hour), plus hourly holiday pay (12.07% of hours worked).

Selection criteria
You will be judged against your ability to demonstrate the following:

Essential criteria:

  • Hold a first degree in a relevant field.
  • Ability to conduct postgraduate-level research in Economics, Political Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting data analysis with statistical software packages (e.g. Stata, R, Python) and reproducible workflows.
  • Ability to distil technical concepts into academic and/or policy writing.
  • Familiarity with research topics in development economics.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience with survey-based data collection tools (e.g. SurveyCTO, ODK) and survey development.
  • Experience collaborating on large-scale data collection projects
  • Interest in political and civics-related outcomes and/or cash transfer programs in development economics.
  • Familairity with Stata and R.
  • Strong communication skills.

EPN Programme Manager

The CSAE and Blavatnik School of Government are looking to recruit a Programme Manager to support the effective delivery of the Economic Policy Network (EPN)’s work.
 
Reporting to the EPN Managing Director and the CSAE Executive Director, your work will involve managing progress in multiple workstreams simultaneously. Day-to-day work will include budget management, supplier contract negotiations, external communications, the maintenance of EPN’s online presence, and shepherding EPN’s various outputs through the production process.
 
You will be involved with projects at every stage, developing and retaining an overview of the programme’s guiding principles. You will also assume responsibility for a small portfolio of CSAE projects held at the School.
 
About you
 
You will need to demonstrate substantial experience in project or programme management in a research or policy environment, and in managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with multiple funding sources. You will have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, strong financial literacy and proficiency in grant management. Knowledge of research funding and philanthropic funding landscapes, and passion for international development and for improving lives around the world through effective public policy are also essential.
